Mysore is the Karnataka state’s second largest city. It is also Mysore Division and Mysore District’s headquarters. It is located along the base of the popular Chamundi Hills. Mysore means “the abode of Mahisha,” wherein Mahisha pertains to Hindu mythology’s demon, Mahishasura.
The city is popular for the festivities they practice during the Dasara Festival. It is also noted for its other attractions like the Peta, Mysore Pak, Mysore Silk Saree and even the Mysore style of painting.
The History of Mysore
Mysore is regarded as the Kingdom of Mysore’s capital until the year 1947. The Wodeyar Dynasty was its ruler at that time. This is except for a short period during the 18th century where Tipu Sultan and Haidar Ali were the ones who took the seat of power. Its cultural growth is attributed to the Wodeyars who were patrons of culture and art. This paved the way for the city to be regarded as the Cultural Capital of Karnataka.
In Hindu Mythology, Mysore’s area was noted as Mahishuru. It was ruled by the demon Mahishasura who was later on killed by Chamundeshwari, a goddess whose temple can be found on top of the Chamundi Hills.
The area where Mysore is standing was formerly known as Puragereuntil the 15th century. Chamaraja
Wodeyar III constructed the Mahishuru Fort in the year 1524. Later on, he passed dominion over this city to his son, Chamaraja Wodeyar IV.
Mysore Kingdom served as a feudatory under Wodeyars and under the rule of the Vijayanagara Empire. Until 1610, Mysore remained in the center of the Wodeyar administration until the time the Vijayanagara governor was ousted by Raja Wodeyar along Srirangapatna, making it his capital. After this, the Mysore Kingdom gradually became independent. It then became a sovereign state during the time of King Narasaraja Wodeyar in the year 1637.
However, when the Mysore Kingdom had a new ruler, Tipu sultan, much of the town was demolished, in his attempt to eradicate traces of the Wodeyar rule. The capital was again moved back to Mysore when Tipu Sultan died in the year 1799 (Fourth Anglo Mysore War). It was Diwan Purnaiah who looked after the administration since Mummadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar was still a minor at that time. Many of the improvements made to the city can be credited to Purnaiah, particularly in public works.
Hence, when the British commissioner, Mark Cubbon, made Bangalore as the capital, the status of Mysore as the administrative center was also lost. It was only until the year 1881 when it regained its status, with the British handing back the power to the Wodeyars. Until the year 1947 and under the Wodeyars, Mysore remained as the capital of the state.
It was in the year 1888 when the municipality of Mysore was established and divided into 8 wards. In 1903, it was actually one of the 1st cities throughout Asia that undertook a planned development. The Quit India Movement was launched in the early 1940s.
Mysore remained part of India’s Mysore state even after independence. The king then was Jayachamarajendra Wodeyar. He was given permission to have his titles intact. He was even cremated in Mysore city.
Tourism grew as years passed. The city remains a peaceful community, except for the occasional riots that can be linked to the Kaveri River water dispute. Other issues were the Premier Studio fire which claimed the lives of numerous people, the National Anthem controversy at Infosys campus and the sudden death of several animals at the popular Mysore Zoo.

Scratch a little under the surface of our cities and you will find that they are in fact very different. Yes, they may have the same looking sky scrapers and US grid system, but really they are as different as chalk and cheese.
You have to visit Sydney. It's my home town so I am slightly biased! The harbour area with the Opera House, Bridge and the Rocks are hard to beat. To get the best view though, get on the ferry to Manly and gaze back at the harbour. It's not all about the views though. You can visit interesting suburbs, sunbathe on its glorious beaches and shop in the boutique shops of Paddington.
Melbourne might not have the Sydney Harbour but it does have other charms. Exploring the lanes between the large buildings, are like Aladdin's Caves. They are totally different and intriguing. It's much more bohemian and European here in Melbourne with a real cafe culture. Some argue the food is better than Sydney. It's debatable but for sure, it's cheaper.
Adelaide should probably be next on your list, although it should be top of your Australian Cities list if you are into your wine. From here you can easily explore 3 great wine regions all within an hour or so from the city. The most famous is probably the Barossa - perfect if you are into the big Reds like Shiraz. My tip here is not to stay in Adelaide itself but head to Glenelg which is just outside the city and right on the beach.
The Western Coast of Australia is less visited than the East. I think it's the extra flying time that puts people off. If you want stunning scenery away from the tourists than head west to Perth. It is much quieter than the other Australian Cities but has lots to offer. Once the office workers go home, the centre can get very quiet so stay in Fremantle for more vibrancy. There's also some spectacular beaches to explore, my favourite being Cottesloe.
Wanting to understand the Aboriginal Culture? The best place is Darwin at the top of Australia. It's best to come here in the dry season between May and October. Outside of these months it can rain a lot and be very hot and humid. The area is fantastic for aboriginal art and culture, notably Kakadu National Park and the Tiwi Islands, both not too far from Darwin.
If you want to do a road trip as part of your Australian holiday then head East and travel from Sydney to Noosa and go via Brisbane. Here it's just a short trip to the Sunshine Coast and the Gold Coast but the city itself has some special sites that every traveler will enjoy.
Whichever of the Australian Cities you choose, you won't be disappointed.--

Yet when you get there you immediately see that despite not having the same party island reputation as some of the others, Majorca is a beautiful island that offers at least the same kind of holiday opportunities as they do. Before you go on your holiday you should check how you will get from the airport to your chosen Majorca hotel.
Airport transfers are infrequent and can be expensive so getting this organized before you leave home can prevent you starting your holiday on a stressful note.Theres something for everyone to do on Majorca. There are activities to suit all preferences, or you could simply soak up the sun! If you want to explore the history and culture then the peaceful fishing villages of Porto Pollensia and Porto Cristo will satisfy that desire, whereas high energy nightlife is best experienced at El Arenal or Magaluf.
If youre taking young children on holiday then Majorca is a perfect destination. There are resorts all over the island which allow you to enjoy the experience of holidaying abroad without the need to find public transport to transfer you, the kids, and all the stuff a family with young children needs for a day on the beach to the nearest sands. Youll be able to find a Majorca hotel that will put you in a great location so you can easily return to your hotel room, or Majorca apartment throughout the day. Some of these hotels have entertainment and clubs especially for kids so youll get an occasional break from the sand castle building.
For accommodation theres a good variety of hotels in Majorca. Whether youve got a large budget for your Majorca hotels, or a small one the choice of hotels in Majorca is wide. If youve got a special kind of Majorca hotel in mind however you should try and book up as far in advance as possible. For example, hotels in Majorca that are almost on the beach, and especially those that have an ocean view, will get booked up quickly. The other option to a hotel room is booking a Majorca apartment. Whether you want a small apartment for just yourself and your partner, or a larger one to share, there are many apartments in Majorca to choose from. As with the hotels in Majorca however, the best situated apartments, and those with the best prices, will book up fast so dont leave it until the last minute.
For those more interested in the Spanish lifestyle, culture and architecture theres a wide range to explore. With zoos, museums and more, theres something for all ages and abilities. If you would prefer an area unspoiled by the usual tourist activity, Camp de Mar is a great choice. This hasnt been added to most package holiday tours as yet and so offers an off the beaten track feel, whilst still maintaining a very high standard of accommodation. Especially recognised for the locality of high quality golf courses, this resort is mainly in house entertainment and designed for those looking to just relax, rather than fill their days with activities.
If youre looking for a holiday on Majorca that doesnt have such a tourist-trap feel to it, Camp de Mar is relatively unspoiled and offers a great opportunity to spend time on Majorca without getting caught up in the noise found elsewhere. Although relaxation is very much the order of the day in this part of the island, golfers will find themselves near to a nicely manicured course, and some hotels do provide in-house entertainment for those who want it. On the other side of the scale, El Arenal is the place to be if nightclubbing is the main purpose of your holiday.
Whatever your age, and whatever youre looking for in a holiday, Majorca is a great destination. Its a place you can visit as a 18-30s single person to enjoy the night and beach life, then again with your family once youre more settled down, and later as an older person more interested in golf than grooving the night away!--

Date: 2009-11-11T09:12:00.001-08:00If youve never considered Costa Brava as a holiday destination then you should give it a look. There are two faces to this beautiful part of Spain. Theres the side that caters to the party loving nightclub and beach crowd, and then theres the gentler more idyllic side. There are only a few villages that are part of the tourist party reputation, but what they lack in number they make up for in atmosphere! The real face of the Costa Brava is known for relaxation with an emphasis on spa treatments and historical architecture rather than nightclubs. If you like your weather warm but not hot and stifling, then the Costa Brava is the place for you!
Costa Brava hotels reflect the diverse difference between the two groups of tourists. There are hotels in Costa Brava that cater more towards the younger (and young a heart) tourists who are there simply for a good time, then there are Costa Brava hotels that are more upmarket and have a different demographic in mind. The Costa Brava hotels catering for the younger set offer a more budget friendly and basic accommodation than the more exclusive spa hotels. If staying in any Costa Brava hotels doesnt appeal you could think about staying in a Costa Brava apartment. Although a hotel environment can give you a good base for all your essential accommodation needs, an apartment in Costa Brava will give you more privacy and less restrictions. It can also save you money if youre going in a group.
Nearest to France, the resort of Roses is a beautiful continental hub with a vibrant mix of Spanish and French culture, which gives a fresh, continental vibe to the area, while the almost unspoilt Calella, to the North-east of Barcelona gives a less touristy feel to any holiday and goes beyond the basic staples of a Spanish holiday. Nearby Roses, in Figueres, you can visit the birthplace of the surrealist artist Dali. The Teatre-Museu Gala Salvador Dal, designed by Dali and his wife, is also situated in Figueres.
For those who like to travel further afield, Alicante is a place with many city sights and beach-based activities to explore. With historical architecture and lovely beaches, theres something for everyone!
Further south you can visit places like Alicante. Alicante is an amazing place, with an huge blend of sea side based activities and as well as city sights to explore " lots of gorgeous architecture. Theres so much variety that youll want to visit again. Several castles dominate the area, alongside these are some of the prettiest cathedrals in the area. There are also several parks in the area, designed to allow you to soak up the natural beauty of the area, without being too far off the beaten track. All in all the Costa Brava caters for many different kinds of people. For families, Cap de Begur is an ideal destination with many child friendly areas. All in all, the Costa Brava is more sedate than other areas of Spain and offers a holiday that isnt all hustle and bustle - unless you want it to be.--
